    What the law actually says

    • Under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 (section 56) your work carries an implied warranty of quality for about six months. Under the Prescription Act 68 of 1969 a customer generally has three years to claim a debt. For new homes, the NHBRC warranties under the Housing Consumers Protection Measures Act 95 of 1998 cover roof leaks for three months, general defects for one year, and major structural defects for five years. Check your contract too, as it can set a longer defects period.
