Safety & Emergency
The cards you hope you never need.
Emergency Numbers -- Construction (South Africa)
Every number a South African construction worker might need, in one place. Print two -- one for the site office, one for the bakkie.
First Aid on Site -- DRSABCD
The first minutes matter most. The DRSABCD action plan and the CPR numbers, in the order you do them -- for the moment you hope never comes.
Service Strike -- What To Do
Hit a buried cable, gas line or water pipe? What you do in the next minute matters. Three services, three responses -- and one rule that is the same for all of them: get clear.
Fire Extinguishers -- Which One for Which Fire
Use the wrong extinguisher and you make it worse -- water on an electrical fire can kill you. The South African fire classes and which extinguisher matches which fire.
Site Incident -- Reporting & COIDA Claim
Someone has been hurt on site, or worse. There are two duties: report it to the Department of Employment and Labour, and lodge the COIDA claim so the worker is covered. The order and the rules.
Silica Dust -- The Exposure Limit & Controls
Cutting, grinding or drilling concrete, brick or stone releases respirable crystalline silica -- and breathing it causes silicosis, an incurable lung disease. The exposure limit and the controls that keep you under it.
Working at Height -- The Rules
Falls are the single biggest killer on South African construction sites. The headline rule: any work where someone could fall 2 metres or more needs a written Fall Protection Plan before it starts. What the law requires.
Noise Exposure Limits on Site
Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent -- the inner-ear hair cells do not grow back. Jackhammers, grinders and concrete saws stack up across a career. The exposure limits, and a 2026 changeover date to diarise.
Scaffold Inspections -- Who, When, How Often
A scaffold is only safe if it is built right and checked often. Construction Regulation 16 and SANS 10085 set who may touch it and how often it must be inspected. The intervals that keep a crew alive.
SANS 10400 -- The Parts, Part by Part
SANS 10400 is the family of national standards that turns the National Building Regulations into technical practice. Build to the part and you comply with the matching regulation. What each part on your job covers.
PPE -- The Employer Must Supply It Free
Personal protective equipment is not a payroll deduction and it is not optional. The OHS Act and the Construction Regulations put the duty to provide it on the employer, free of charge. What is covered and who must do what.
Compliance & Inspections
Checklists that keep you inspection-ready.
Construction Work Permit & Notification Thresholds
Big jobs need a construction work permit from the Chief Inspector before you start; smaller-but-still-sizeable jobs need the client to notify in writing. The thresholds under the Construction Regulations 2014.
Electrical Certificate of Compliance -- The Rules
An electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC) says the installation is safe and legal. When you need one, who can issue it, and the 2-year rule that catches out every property sale.
Plumbing & Gas CoC -- Where To Check
People ask for a single national expiry date for a plumbing or gas Certificate of Compliance the way the electrical CoC has its 2-year transfer rule. There is not one. Here is what is actually true, and who to confirm with.
Your Rights at Work
Pay, leave, notice and the rules your employer must follow.
National Minimum Wage & Earnings Threshold 2026/27
The legal wage floor every employer must pay, the lower EPWP rate, and the BCEA earnings threshold that decides who gets automatic overtime and Sunday pay. The current South African figures.
BCEA Leave Entitlements
The leave every worker is entitled to under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act -- annual, sick, family responsibility, maternity and parental. The statutory minimums you cannot pay your way out of.
BCEA Notice Periods & Severance Pay
How much notice to end employment, and what severance pay is owed on retrenchment. The Basic Conditions of Employment Act minimums, by length of service.
Overtime, Sunday & Public Holiday Pay
What you must pay for overtime, Sundays, public holidays and night work under the BCEA -- and the earnings threshold that switches these rights off for higher earners.
UIF Contributions -- What You Pay In
The Unemployment Insurance Fund is funded by a small slice of every pay packet -- half from the worker, half from the employer, up to a monthly ceiling. The contribution maths in one place.
Money, Tax & Legal
Rates, deadlines and escalation steps.
SARS Travel Deemed-Cost Table 2026/27
The fixed, fuel and maintenance costs SARS allows per vehicle value when you claim travel on the deemed-cost method. Effective 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027. Plus the flat rate for the simple method.
Turnover Tax Rates 2026/27
Turnover tax is the simplified, single-tax option for micro-businesses -- one rate on turnover instead of income tax, VAT, provisional tax and more. The 2026/27 rate table, with the R600,000 zero band.
Small Business Corporation Tax 2026/27
A qualifying small company pays tax on a progressive scale starting at 0%, instead of the flat 27% corporate rate. The SBC rate table for years of assessment ending 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Medical Scheme Fees Tax Credits 2026/27
A fixed monthly tax credit for you and your dependants on a registered medical scheme -- it reduces the tax you pay, rand for rand. The 2026/27 amounts.
SASSA Grant Amounts (from April 2026)
The main South African social grant amounts as increased from April 2026. The amounts are pinned; the income and asset means tests change too, so always confirm your eligibility at the source.
Prescribed Rate of Interest (late payment)
The legal interest rate you can charge on an overdue debt when no rate was agreed -- set under the Prescribed Rate of Interest Act. Distinct from the SARS interest rates. Always quote it with its effective date.
UIF Benefits -- The Sliding Scale
How much UIF pays out and for how long. The benefit is a sliding share of your old salary, capped, and you build it up by working. The figures that decide a claim.
Provisional Tax Key Dates 2026/27
If you earn income that is not taxed by PAYE - like a self-employed tradie or a company - you pay provisional tax twice a year. The dates below are for the 2027 year of assessment (1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027).
Retirement Lump-Sum Tax Tables 2026/27
When you take cash from a retirement fund, it is taxed on a special scale -- not your normal rates. Two tables: one for retiring or death, a harsher one for withdrawing early. The first R550,000 at retirement is tax-free.
Estate Duty & Donations Tax 2026/27
Two taxes on giving wealth away -- one when you die (estate duty), one while you are alive (donations tax). The abatement, the exemption and the rates for 2026/27. The donations exemption jumped to R150,000 this year.
VAT -- Thresholds & Rate 2026/27
When you must register for VAT, when you may, and the rate. Budget 2026 reset the thresholds for the first time in 17 years -- the old R1 million figure is out of date.
CIDB Grades & Fees -- Where To Check
We will not print a CIDB fee schedule or tender-value band table here, because the 2026 public sources conflict and we will not guess at a number you would rely on. Here is how to get the figure from the only source that counts.
COIDA Assessment & NHBRC Fees -- Where To Check
Two figures every builder asks for -- the COIDA construction assessment tariff and the NHBRC enrolment fee -- depend on rates we will not print from an unverified source. Here is how the maths works and where to get the live number.
NBCEI Electrical Wages -- Region D (Overberg)
The minimum hourly rates for the electrical industry under the NBCEI bargaining council, Region D, Area O, Tier 2 (the Overberg and Cape Winelands towns). Effective 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027.
Small Claims & Court Money Limits
Chasing an unpaid invoice in South Africa runs up a ladder of courts, each with a money ceiling. Which court hears which size of claim, and what the cheap DIY option can and cannot do.
Prescription & Defect Time Limits
Two clocks run on every job: the one that kills an unpaid debt after three years, and the warranty windows on defects. Miss the first and you cannot sue at all. The time limits that decide your rights.
Print the lot
Every card prints cleanly on one A4 page.
