Do I Need a Waste Permit?

Tell us what you do with construction waste to see if you need to register or licence under NEMWA.

    What this tool does

Asks about the activity, volume and hazard status of your waste and tells you whether you need SAWIS registration as a transporter or a full waste-management licence under NEMWA.

What do you do with the waste?

What volume of waste passes through your business each month?

    Is any of it hazardous?

    What the law actually says

    • The National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008 (NEMWA) regulates how waste is generated, stored, transported, treated and disposed of in South Africa.
    • The Listing Notices (GN R921 of 2013, as amended) list activities that require a waste-management licence. Categories A and B are issued by the municipality or province respectively.
    • Transporters of waste in the course of business must register on the South African Waste Information System (SAWIS) under the National Waste Information Regulations 2012.
